Environmental education is one of the important issues in the world today. It helps to understand the natural ecosystems and conservation with their role in environment. Every country gives emphasis to make environment as friendly by maintaining nature conservation with low negative impact. For ensuring sustainable development of a country, environmental education of the people and the effective involvement of community are a must. Increased concern about the environment in recent decades has paralleled the development of environmental education, and in particular has clarified its aims and purposes. The aim of environmental education is to teach and educate the public about the function of environment. Environmental education gives ideas and teaching regarding natural beauty, forest conservation, wildlife, sea and rivers, hills, flora & fauna, forest sites, species habit, animals' life cycle and other related aspects of environment. It also gives emphasis to manage the behavior of human towards eco-system and conservation according to sustainability.
Bangladesh is a country of South Asia and Bay of Bengal is situated in the south side of the country. It is one of the risk-prone countries in the world for bad effect of climate change and natural hazards. Due to the climate change and environment pollution, sea level increases here every year. As a result, flood, cyclone, heavy rainfall and other natural hazards occur every year in this country and create a lot of damage in resources, human life and their livelihood. But much of the environmental damage of this country may be reduced by proper awareness and consciousness of the people regarding environment. Again, Bangladesh is a country of natural beauty. A web of rivers crisscrosses the plain land of Bangladesh. The natural forest of Bangladesh was considered one of the richest and biologically diverse forest resources due to its unique location. An estimated 5,000 species of angiosperms alone are available in the forests of Bangladesh which falls between two major floristic regions of Asia. Bangladesh possesses some unique natural resources of global significance such as the world's largest mangrove forest, the largest unbroken sea beach, a unique landscape set in the world's largest alluvial delta with flora and fauna. The country offers the extremes of wildlife from the blue whale, which occasionally appears in the Bay of Bengal. The bird-life covers a range from the showy peacock to the tiny Tickle's flower picker and the talkative Mayana; while reptile world embraces the King Kobra, one of the world's most sinister snakes and the Python, one of its largest snakes. All of these attractions are valuable elements for environmental education. So there is huge scope to develop environmental education in Bangladesh which will be fruitful to gather knowledge regarding environment and ensure awareness against environmental pollution.
There are some prerequisites for development of environmental education. These foster clear awareness about economic, social, political and ecological aspects of environment; provide the knowledge, values, and attitudes to protect and improve the environment and create opportunities of meaningful behavior towards the environment. In Bangladesh, some of the natural advantages are remaining to develop environmental education. There are a lot of rivers, forest sites, water bodies, national parks and other natural sites surrounding the country. Bangladesh has beautiful landscape and ecological sites. As it is situated in a geographical nerve point, the country becomes a suitable example for environmental education and development.
Environmental education can enhance the knowledge of the people by the teaching them of nature. For ensuring environmental education some involvements are very essential. Firstly, mass people's involvement is an emerging source for environmental education. Without their spontaneous participation, environmental teaching does not occur properly. Secondly, organizational efforts are very effective for environmental awareness of society. Thirdly, government has to play a vital role for the development of environmental education. Government can facilitate environmental educational programs. Fourthly, the efforts of some international organizations which are working for raising the environmental consciousness to the people need to be more invigorated. The organisations such as WWF, UNESCO, WCED, WCU, IES whose efforts are mentionable. Fifthly, media is a powerful weapon for building the society. Media can take part in encouraging the people towards environmental education.
Bangladesh has huge opportunity to ensure environmental education within the people. Some important measures can be taken for implementing the environmental education. Firstly, people of all age groups have to be involved under the educational programs. Educational programs can be arranged for the students, teachers, and curriculum planners to ensure environmental experience and teaching. Secondly, government and other organizations can various awareness activities for increasing the consciousness towards the environment. Various programs such as, workshop, seminar, discussion meetings are helpful for creating awareness. Thirdly, advertisement is an important means for developing the environmental education. Print and electronic media, publicity works, bill boards can be used in this case. Finally, collective efforts from government and private organizations are necessary to foster clear learning regarding environment and concern about economic, social, and ecological aspects of environmental education.
